History of development

In 1987, of the 1,199,000 registered fully automatic motorcycles, the 750cc-plus class accounted for 12.4%, or 149,000 units. The growing popularity of big bikes was thought to be a reflection of the maturation of the Japanese motorcycle market and the growing number of users who longed for the high-status super-750cc class.

On the other hand, in 1989, an in-house designer who admired the CB series began making clay models on his own. Initially, it was viewed with strange eyes, but as the days passed, more and more people started to pay attention to it, so Honda Motor Co., Ltd. took a different approach to creating the CB series next-generation flagship model from conventional motorcycles. This model and the 1992 model were developed based on the PROJECT BIG-1 concept [Note 1], which started with the pursuit of an ideal bike image that fully recognizes the value as a status for the development staff who are also CB fans themselves. This is the CB400 Super Four released in April 2004.

Vehicle commentary

It adopted a double cradle type frame with a round cross section steel pipe with a large 23L capacity gasoline tank and a large body with a wide handle, but weight reduction was also considered by using aluminum materials for the swing arm and so on. The engine is the SC21E water-cooled 4-stroke 4-valve DOHC 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 998cc that was installed in the SC24-type CBR1000F. Equipped with SC30E type detuned to torque 8.6kgf・m/6,000rpm.

The front suspension uses a telescopic type with a 43mm diameter inner tube, and the rear suspension uses a damper with a reservoir tank.

Both the front and rear wheels are equipped with 18-inch hollow 3-spoke aluminum wheels. The tire size is 120/70-R18 for the front wheels and 170/60-R18 for the rear wheels.

In addition, the white x red paint produced throughout the year is very time-consuming, and the following painting processes are as follows.

• Paint the whole thing candy red
• Mask the part that will leave candy red and peel off everything else
• Leave the masking as it is and paint the peeled part with pearl white
• Finish by blowing clear on the whole

For this reason, the paint boundary step is lower in the candy red portion. In addition, in the successor CB1300 series, candy red was applied to the sheet instead of being painted, resulting in a significant cost reduction.

1993 model year. The body color adopts two-tone of white x red and black x silver. The monthly sales target is 4,300 units, and the suggested retail price excluding consumption tax is 920,000 yen.

• Rear sprocket changed from 42 teeth to 43 teeth
• Reduced wheelbase from 1,540mm to 1,535mm
• Equipped with hazard lamps
• Changed the clutch lever to an adjustable type that can be adjusted according to the size of the rider's hand.
• In addition to the conventional 5-step initial adjustment mechanism, the rear suspension damper with reservoir tank has been changed to a fully adjustable type that can adjust the damping force in 4 steps for each of the compression side and extension side.
• Slight weight reduction by changing the design of the inner rotor of the F brake rotor.

Export specifications for overseas

Although it was exported to Europe and North America, there are the following differences from the Japanese domestic specification.

In March 1998, the model was changed to the successor CB1300 Super Four, and production and sales ended.
