1968 Yamaha DT-1 is one of the pioneers of the off-road, wild land trail riding motorcycle with the “scramble racing” (motocross) style produced by the Yamaha Motor Corporation. A Dual-sport motorcycle built for off-road riding, the light and slim DT-1 was equipped with block-pattern tires and had sufficient ground clearance. It had a 250cc two-stroke, single-cylinder, 5-port engine based on a motocross design, and Ceriani-type front suspension.

A history of true off-road machines. Entering the 1960s, an evolution was occurring in Japanese motorcycles, taking them out of the initial era of purely utilitarian models into a new era of diversity with models designed for the enjoyment of touring and the sport of motorcycle racing. At a time when there was no clear distinction between on-road and off-road bikes. This was also a time when the sport of “scramble racing” (motocross) competed over the fields, hills and riverbeds of the natural landscape was becoming popular.

The first DT model, the DT-1, was released in 1968 and quickly sold through its initial 12,000 production run. The Yamaha DT-1 succeeded in creating a new category known as “trail bikes.” It boasted technologies and functions expressly for off-road riding like a front fork with the longest stroke of any Japanese model at the time, wide-radius block-pattern tires, an engine guard and more. These trends led Yamaha Motor to develop a new type of machine targeting the “trail riding” (off-road, wild land trail riding) scene in the U.S. Named the DT-1, it quickly became a hit model and sparked a boom in trail riding throughout Japan as well. In Japan, it led to the creation of "Trail Riding Courses" and "Trail Land" riding facilities that opened up a new world of riding enjoyment.
